When a domain name registration company forces itself into the Registrant Contact Name Field of your registration records and denies you access to your domain name account, it’s commonly know as being “held hostage.”

  • Have your ever purchased a site builder that includes your domain name in the package?
  • Have you ever received your domain name for free, when you sign up for website services?
  • Have you tried to move to another hosting company with your domain name and found out that the hosting company you bought your domain name from will not allow you access to your domain name account?
  • Did a friend help you register your domain and give their name as the Registrant Contact Name?
  • Is YOUR name in the Registrant Contact Name Field?
  • Is YOUR active email account name in the Contact Field?
  • Do you have owner access to your domain name registration details?  Meaning were you sent a password and username to access your domain name account?
  • Can you transfer you domain name to another domain name service company?
  • Can you change the nameservers or redirect your domain name to another hosting company?

This above list can go on and on… If you do not have complete control of your domain name… most likely your domain name is in a hostage or critical situation.

In a nutshell, some web hosting services will hold your domain name hostage in order to keep your business or at least make it difficult for you to move to a new host provider.

Many new site owners have already gotten themselves into a hostage domain name situation.

There not much you can do, except pay the price to gain control of your domain name… unless you have proof of payment for the alleged domain name being registered for you or your company on your behalf.

Tips to new domain name Registrants and those domain name holders that are not yet in a hostage situation.

Buying a domain name is usually easy to do. But if you buy a domain name without any knowledge of “ownership” versus “control”, you could very well be placing your domain name in jeopardy.

Important Domain Name Control TIPS:

First and foremost, do not offer your preferred domain name to be used for a free domain name account. This is a surefire way of placing your companies preferred domain name into a hostage situation. Free domain names are in most ALL cases NOT registered in your name as the the owner and control administrator. The company offering the free domain most likely has total control of your chosen domain name.

What is Domain Name Control

The registration facts should be accurate and complete.

  • You must have total control over the administration of your domain name to have complete ownership.
  • You should be able to lock your domain name admin panel.
  • You should be able to change your password information on your domain name admin panel.
  • You should be able to transfer your domain name.

When a domain name is registered on your behalf, make sure it’s YOUR name and details which appear in the Registrant Contact Fields and Billing Fields.

Registrant: Registrant Contact Name Fields

  • The registration facts should be accurate and complete.
  • registrant-firstname: Your First Name
  • registrant-lastname: Your Last Name
  • registrant-organization: Your Company Name
  • registrant-street1: Your Current Street Address
  • registrant-pcode: Your Current Postal Code
  • registrant-state: Your Current State
  • registrant-city: Your Current City
  • registrant-ccode: Your Current Country Code IE: US
  • registrant-phone: Your Current Phone Number
  • registrant-email: Your Current E-mail Address
  • Administrative Contact: Admin Contact Name Fields
  • Same contact field names as Registrant. Name and contact details of your webmaster or reseller organization can be entered into admin contact fields if appropriate.

Technical Contact: Technical Contact Fields

  •  Same contact field names as Registrant. If your webmaster is responsible for technical aspects relating to the domain name their contact details can be entered into these contact fields if appropriate.
  • Billing Contact: Billing Contact Fields
  • Same contact field names as Registrant. Your billing information should mirror your current owner registrant fields.

If you own a domain name, take control of your domain name today. Make the necessary adjustments to the contacts on record so that your Domain Name can never be held hostage.

Check your domain name at whois, to see your domain name data. Make sure you registrant information is always up to date.

Actively keep track of your renewal date, so you won’t lose your domain name because you weren’t notified of the renewal date. Faithfully add the renewal date to your reminder calendar.
